Hi, I'm 17 and soon going into a college course for catering in north wales, I thought this would be a great place for advice and help

Hello barryevans! Welcome to Chef Talk. (May we call you Barry?) I see you've already jumped into the culinary school forum, so you've done some reconnoitering for yourself around the site. You're welcome to read in the Professionals' forums too, but please don't post there- at least not until you finish your culinary training. You can post in any of the General forums, and we'll see to it your questions are addressed. (The pros do hang out there as well.)

How did you settle on a career in professional kitchens? Did someone at home or elsewhere inspire you?

Be sure to explore the other parts of the Chef Talk site besides the forums: cooking articles, including some excellent basic topics; photo galleries; equipment and cookbook reviews; plus more. Of course, the people here are the most excellent resource of all. Take some time to do some searching of the earlier conversations, because some of your more basic questions have probably been asked at some point. Of course, those which are specific to your country, or which are more current in nature, will require you to post them yourself.

I hope you visit often to learn and to share your experiences. Also, don't sell your own knowledge short! You may have learned specific- perhaps unique- regional or cultural culinary traditions to share with even the most veteran professionals and home cooks among us. We look forward to your participation in the community.

Welcome!

Hi barry, welcome. Have you had much feedback on the college you're attending? In Scotland we're very much reducing the practical in favour of lots of theory and getting experience with sandwich courses. i.e..getting placements while you study. It'll be interesting to hear how you do.  So different to the US system eh?

You're going to like it here.

Looking forward to hearing from you...Best of luck

PS have a great summer

Yes I've got my interview for it coming up soon so fingers crossed! :) and here its the same thing, more theory in the college, but they set you up with a restaurant of your choice (if they accept of course)

and thanks, I can already tell it'll be a lot of help. You too!
