Trying to advance my cooking career

Thread Starter

Hi everyone!

I'm a 23-yr-old woman beginning my career as a cook in Philadelphia--I worked a few summers in my college's catering kitchen, and now, for almost a year, I've been working in a tiny kitchen at a popular cafe with great food. I joined this forum because I really want to advance my career (get into more upscale/high volume kitchens, eventually get paid more, and further in the future, run a kitchen) but I know I need more practice and advice to do so.

I'm especially interested in: learning more cooking skills, learning about more "serious" professional cooking than where I am now, sharing experiences, and talking to other women in professional kitchens.

Looking forward to great discussions and learning!

PhillyCook, you came to exactly the right place to accomplish all those goals. From the professionals here (including the seasoned veterans) you'll get the benefit of their experience. From the others just starting out you can pick up on some tips that can save you some grief and help you move forward more quickly. From the home cooks- who hail from all over the world- you can learn about cuisines you've never tried, ingredients you don't know exist right now, and traditions that knowing about may make a difference at a crucial moment. In short, you just never know what you're going to learn here!

Of course, the other members will undoubtedly learn from you as well, so don't be shy about posting. Besides the discussion forums we have excellent cooking articles, cookbook and equipment reviews, photo galleries (wonderful plating ideas there), and more. Take some time for a tour of the whole site and you'll see what I mean.

We hope you enjoy being part of this diverse community and that you make it a part of your development as a culinary professional.

Good luck, and welcome!
