Plant A:

Plant B:

Guess which one is from my garden, and which one was spotted on an evening stroll around the neighborhood?

Plant A is in your garden and Plant B is around the 'hood.

And about a block in the other direction there is a house that already has jalapenos ready to harvest.  I don't even have flowers on mine yet.  Oh well.

mjb, plant b is in your neighbors yard?  I would venture to guess by the looks of the soil that possibly your soil is a bit too moist?  Peppers like it dry and hot, yes?

Well, hopefully it's just a late bloomer. Last year all our veggies died.  We couldn't figure out why. We had Japanese eggplants, cukes, peppers, etc. We had cared for them the same as the fruitful year before. Plants can be tricky!

I'm not worried.  Last year my cour du beu ( an Italian oxheart tomato ) looked like it was ready to shrivel up and die.  By the end of the summer it was a monster dwarfing all my other maters.

I'll bet that other pepper plant started life under lights and on a heat mat to get that kind of jump on yours.

Colleen--it wasn't just you last summer. Gardening in Chicago was dismal last year. I had a bed in a community garden and no-one's harvest was very good.

@ ChicagoTerry - that makes me feel better - thanks.  We had tried those earth boxes that Rick Bayless uses on the roof of his restaurants. They did amazing the first couple years until last year. We didn't have time to plant this year, unfortunately.
