Taking care of the most expensive machine- Your body

So, we're going back into season here, and I thought it might be informative to start a thread on our better habits.

I tend to treat season like a marathon runner. I load up on vitamins, re-arrange my in home meal plan, and get up early to run in the mornings. And I walk my dog as soon as I get home, regardless of how late or tired I am, to blow off steam and cut down on drinking.

What are everyone else's habits and routines?

Well first , imma gonna attempt to change my mattress XD its giving me back pain and thats the last thing i need in a kitchen. 

 

Im gonna start doing dance classes again since it counts as excerise. 

I already walk 6 miles a day ( 3 times a week ). 

 

Ill probably start cooking at home more , and probably attempt to read alot more. 

But till then lets get a job ( staying home for 13 days is killing me.

I get myself superfood breakfasts on a regular basis.

that means loading up on superfoods.... things like hempseed, chiaseed, oatmeal, dried fruit, coconut oil, raw cocoa, maca powder. all that stuff together with milk/ oatmilk/ soymilk however you wish.

when I want cold, I soak the chiaseed with oatmeal (rolled)  and milk and dried fruit overnight in fridge, next morning add all the rest.

often I add fresh or stewed fruits as I like .....

sometimes do a frozen sliced banana  with all that in blender, blend till thick paste and enjoy a breakfast "icecream".

 

keeps me going for hours, gets me enough good stuff to deal with the last meal of the day at work....not always healthy.

aside from that, don't drink too much, get 8 hours sleep in where possible, drink at least 2 quarts water a day.

Well,

I usually awaken at noon, stumble down the stairs to the coffee machine. Drink a pot of coffee. Slowly work my way over to the bathroom, shower, f*ck shaving, brush my teeth. Give the chef jacket a smell, kinda OK but not really, put it on and find a pair of dickies on the floor. Get the kitchen clogs, put them on, don't wipe off last nights salmon off the heel. Take the train to work, analyze and regret my entire existence at the restaurant on the way to work. Pass the homeless men after getting off the subway, think about how awesome they have it. Walk into work, stand for 12 hours straight. No break, no food, coffee, coffee, coffee, stress, anger, hurting feet and neck, sweaty as hell, listen to non stop b*tching chef. Finish shift, drink heavily, go home. Eat a jar of peanut butter and crackers. Done.

LOL . that was me last week attempting a sous position at a new place. 

 

Wake up at 10am , eat toast , brush teeth , 5 minutes till bus  , so i go to the bus stop. 

Get my bus at 10:30 to get to work 10 minutes early at 11:00

Change at my job ( apron is dirty oh well ) , the clogs are dirty , and stained with something white , must be flour <_<

Put on some deodrent just to not smell like food after 10 minutes. 

Its 11am , all the other employees are late <_< they get to work at 11:30 , seriously wtf no comitment what so ever. 

 

Noon customers flowing in wanting food. The restaurant sucks , but what ever i do whats possible

16 HOURS GO BY AND NO POTTY BREAK OR FOOD , just coffee and water and leftover frenchfries that werent collected from the fryers...

 

Hips hurt , wash dishes cuz dish lady flaked. 

Get a motorcycle ride home at 2am....

Shower , computer , sleep at 3am

and repeat.....

 

HA i quit after 3 days not because of the hours , but the food , the place , the employees , the boss , the kitchen everything sucked. 

I have worked 16 hours at restaurants that were amazing with great food and great employees and great chefs , and enjoyed it but this place was by far the worst , now im home wanting to work and well no job offers <_<.

At least i can sleep all day , drink all night , and not have to worry about getting to work early. 

 

Who knows maybe next week ill find a good job , with a hlaf decent pay , with an actual functioning kitchen , but lets not get my hopes up just yet XD.

Oh, KK, that sucks, but good for you for leaving a shitty kitchen. Best of luck on your job search!

And LC 854, SO many lols at your post. That, however, is specifically what I'm trying to avoid getting pulled into again.

Although I feel your pain...
I strongly disagree with wearing uniform to work. Especially a not so clean one...
No matter how tired or how little time you have there is always time for personal hygiene and cleanliness. I'm not sure about the u.s but over here not only is it illegal but very frowned apon . I have only worn uniform ( just pants ) to work once and immediately regretted it . I was not so politely informed that this practise is for dogey $@#%ers and the resident sherif of said kitchen went to great lengths to describe his distaste smile.gif

Not having a dig at ya just stating my opinion.

Well sometimes after working 16 hour shifts and along with a 30 minute commute to and from work , i doubt the first thing any cook would want to do it go wash some clothes when they get home. 

Not that i dont wash mines when POSSIBLE , but i understand why sometimes it isnt done. XD

Each to there own. I can understand if you have no days off. Yes 16 hour back to back doubles with an hour train ride and a 20 minute walk with no break... I understand really I do but still was never an option IMO. Again each to there own.

I was just kidding about wearing unclean clothes to work for dramatic effect LOL. I always wear a clean uniform (I have 5 different jackets and pairs of pants) to work.

Totally got the humor. My work laundry routine is so ingrained that at 7am on of my first thoughts is "Oh crap, did I move my chef coat and pants from the washed to the dryer?"
And I usually have, the night before. And that equals extra sleep.

Im crazy , since i get home at night , or late afternoon many times i would wash my uniform , and since well no dryer at home , i stick it behind the fridge. 

Nice and dry in the morning XD 

 

If that doesnt work i usually have enough uniforms to last a week till my day off XD

Although I feel I may be crazier

I have specific uniforms for specific days . The ones that look nicer / are newer and better fitting I wear fri& saterday. The ones that are slightly annoying e.g broken ties on the aprons I wear on quiet days. I have an jacket / apron specifically for buffets / meeting customers . I wash once a week iron everything and fold& stack in the order that I will need it! Crazy??? I call it Awsome. I also have old jackets that are discoloured as an emergency backup if I have no days off. In summer when I've worked in extremely hot locations I put a second jacket in the fridge and would change into it before service.
Extreme organisation is satisfying on a very creepy level for me I think lol.

The pros of having it dry in the back of the frige is that i dont have to worry about leaving the dryer on and get to go to bed early XD. 

 

Good think i stocked up on white and black shirts and aprons just in case XD

Bad thing is i have been work free for 2 weeks now , and im bored as hell <_< , need to feel a lunch rush as soon as possible or i may die of boredom .... im serious

When I'm off work I tend to go a bit crazy too. i start making ridiculously extravagant food at home... The wife never complains

My biggest problem is sleeping, when i get home at 1 am  a busy 12 hour shift i won't fall  asleep until at least 4 am sometimes even as late as 6 or 7 am, and when you need to get be back at work at for a morning stock take and ordering, it takes a serious toll on your body, as a youngster i could do it but now not sol much. as much as i need to watch what i eat which is kinda hard when you are always at work i believe lack of sleep is just as bad. 

 

That's my two cents

I feel for ya, i havent slept like a normal person in almost 40 years. You get used to it after about 30 years.

ugh!!!!! I put on a couple of pounds in the last one and a half years....new job changed my workout time (if any) I just need to make the effort to get up early and do it. We as a collective group are only as good as our health. I'm at the point to where after cooking for over 18 years, I want to enjoy my life and just be happy!...

I feel for those who don't get home 'till around 2a or 3a and have to be back at work in the morning. We don't clock in until 3p for the "early" shift, so we get at least some time to rest after getting home at 4 in the morning.

 

As for me... I find yoga to be invaluable for keeping my body in good health. Every workday for me, I do sun salutations after waking up. Depending on the day I'll ramp it up into a little more intense session to warm up a bit more.
