Best Burger Bun?

Thread Starter

So I just had a bit of an epiphany. I think my favorite burger bun of all time would be a pretzel bun. I've made my own because I cannot find anywhere in my area that I would be able to buy them:

But they are a lot of work. So tonight my father brought me a burger he cooked and the only thing I had to put it on was a bagel. Right now I'm eating this thinking.. hmm.. this is real close to a pretzel roll and it will do in a crunch!

So what's your vote on the best possible piece of bread to hold our great American meat patty?!

Never tried a pretzel roll before but that sounds good!! A bagel... not so good (to me). :)

I really like burgers made with ciabatta bread. They're usually square.

I usually prefer bread that has some consistency and texture. I'm not a fan of the soft-sponge texture of the usual buns.

Just a plain old bun, no sesames.  Pretzels, bagels, all these things you're talking about are too hard for me.  I need access to the patty itself and don't want to chew through a wad of dough.  Now that I think about it most of the time I order a patty melt, with regular white sandwich bread which only serves as a vehicle for butter.

Eastshores, have you thought about pitching your pretzel rolls to a local bakery?  They're so pretty.

Brioche, hands down!

I like baguettes with my burgers. Never liked the soft typical buns. If i have to use a bun, local bakeries bake a bread we call "rosetas":

Sometimes i like burgers with pita.

In a pinch, I like toasted English muffins -- not too much dough, just enough to hold the burger (and toppings) together.

I have to agree with Koukou, I prefer a soft bun for my burgers.  I really dislike hard or chewy buns as its hard to keep the burger and fixin's in place while eating.  Any enriched, soft bun will do, although I am partial to soft potato buns.  Most pretzel  buns I've had aren't too chewy so they would probably be good, but I stay away from ciabatta, baguettes, and hard rolls when it comes to my burgers.

Funny, I personally can't stand soft buns. They're not really food to me, they're more like a sponge that soaks up the hamburger juices and quickly becomes nearly nothing in your hands... it's almost as if the only goal is to avoid getting your fingers dirty.

I need something that has more chewiness to it, that I can feel my teeth sinking into when I bite, and that doesn't disappear in my mouth the instant I close it. :)

Exactly, they're just a nice soft comfy shield for your hands not to get dirty!
