Found a rental kitchen ... Now need a place to sell

Hi,

I found a kitchen to rent to bake my desserts.

Now I have to decide how to sell them elsewhere since the kitchen is not a storefront.

I was thinking the cheapest type of setup for selling is mostly a food truck without the kitchen equipment since I already made my things. The mall are probably the worst cause the rent is crazy and it just a booth

I was wondering if it possible to sell them from my car in a popular area or do I actually need to have a truck/van like vehicle to sell them to the public?

Depends.

I live in a small town outside of a huge city.

Go east with my wares and will need permits and all that jazz.

Go west....not a big deal because it is mostly farming and farm communities.

There is always someone selling something.

Trucks, vans, small open tents all seem to be popular.

Just be respectful and remove your signs every day and you most likely will not be bothered.

In New York the appropriate regulatory agency is is the Dept. of Agriculture and Markets. You want to check with a similar agency in your area to avoid any fines you may get from not having the appropriate permits, licenses, etc.  Some places require permits unless you have permission from the owner to sell on private land although you may still need a vendors permit. It all depends on local and state regulations. Unfortunately it also depends on how stringent local officials are about applying the laws. In any case, check first to save headaches later.

There's a five year waiting list for new food truck permits in NYC.

You still need to be permitted from NY Dept of Agriculture and Markets. You will also need liability insurance and appropriate packaging/labeling.

 

Farmers markets are a good starting point to market your food wares, but they are already mostly overloaded with baked goods. Unless you source your ingredients from local farms you'll have a hard time getting into them

 

If your goods have some popular nutritional twist like vegan, gluten free, sugar free, etc. you're sure to find demand in the farm markets and other retail venues. Otherwise, you are trying to enter a very saturated market.
