No comparision.

Thread Starter

Tonight's dinner was a mushroom risotto (porcini and oyster) with a red lettuce, roast beef bits, feta, etc. salad.  Good stuff.

I've made a few risottos over the years, but it occurred to me that I have never had one in a restaurant - I've only eaten my own.  They are tasty, Karen and I slick them right up.  I have no idea how they compare to what you might get anywhere else.

Someday I'll get a chance, but for now, what dishes have you made that others offer, but you've only tasted your own?

That's an interesting question.  I prefer some foods that I make over other versions but I have tasted them to compare.  For example, I'm not a snob but I make the best pastitsio and every greek I know makes it.  Nobody's even comes close to mine, I don't even bother eating anyone else's pastitsio.  But no I can't think of anything, especially mushroom risotto as it appears on so many menus and have tasted many myself.

when we do go out to eat, which isn't all that often, I prefer to order dishes that WOULDN'T make at home more so than anything else.

Recently though, we've decided that we will no longer order pizza, I guess we just have had one too many horrible pies, especially in the last couple months, having to eat out as we traveled.

I have eaten Risotto out and prefer my own as I have not found any that have been cooked correctly.

It's either under cooked or mush.......

mafe

vatapa

moussaka

anticuchos

After making it for years, I finally got to cross anticuchos of the list last February when we went to Roatan. We had dinner at a great little Peruvian restaurant and naturally they had it on the menu, so i jumped at the chance and of course ordered it. What fun! Enjoyment for my taste buds and fuel for my grey matter.

Cheflayne , if you ever com to brazil eat vatapa here XD.

Dont even eat it at fancy restaurants , the markets and the bahianas probably make it best with acaraje.

We were actually contemplating Brazil for vacation in February, but it is going to be Nicaragua this time. Brazil is definitely on my bucket list though. Usually don't do much in the way of fancy restaurants on vacation, rather do the mom and pops, markets, baianas, and cooking myself type of thing. Man you got me salivating just thinking about it!

Lasagna is one of the items I will not eat out, because I feel I make the absolute best lasagna ever. I almost rather have the frozen stoffers brand than order it at a restaurant.

When i worked at a buffet i would eat it , but thats because we the cooks were  making it using our recipes.

Hell i made most of the lasagnas during service so i knew it was good.

Do i eat at restaurants?.... Nope , my mother and even myself make better lasagnas then most restaurants.

So far my favorite is one my mother made ..... with ground beef , ham , and parm.

But i love a turkey and zucchini lasagna my chef had made once , it was orgasmic. XD
