Thanksgiving weekend - and NO turkey!

Wow.  This is probably a first for me.   Thanksgiving with no turkey at all consumed!  Wednesday eve driving to Phoenix we had some tasty bbq in Cedar City.  Thursday night Karen's dad and sister had a big turkey lunch, we got there about 8 and had some frozen lasagna that happened to be done just as we arrived.  Friday evening I had planned on turkey, but it was just for my wife, my sister and myself so I was going to get a turkey thigh or two, debone and stuff.  Could not find any, stuffed a small pork loin roast instead.  My sister loved it - she called the sauce "angel sauce" since she found it heavenly.  It was simply some shallot sweated in the pan drippings, deglazed with vermouth, a bit of thyme and sage, then heavy cream reduced a bit.  Oh - and the last few bits of the mushroom, pepper and maple sage sausage stuffing that didn't make it into the roast was added.  Did some boiled red potatoes with butter, salt and pepper, broccoli - good dinner.

 

Instead of spending Saturday night in Phoenix and driving ALL day sunday we left Phoenix sat. eve and headed for Kingman.  Stopped at a Denny's in Wickenberg, the prime rib philly melt sandwich was better than I expected.

 

I may cook up a bit of turkey for dinner tomorrow, but I'm leaning towards a slow roasted chicken as recently discussed in some other threads.  We shall see.

I've spent many Tdays avoiding turkey altogether.  The day after Thanksgiving while people are out killing each other at Walmart I head to the supermarket and pick up several turkey breasts that the store is trying to rid of.  I keep them in the freezer and we eat weekly turkey dinners well into the new year.  One breast is enough to feed all 3 of us for a couple of days.

Another item that usually goes on sale right after Thanksgiving is jars of oysters.  Some people put oysters in their stuffing, so stores stock up, then unload the leftovers, so to speak.

 

Not as good as fresh, but I still like them, any day of the year!

Gee, I wish I knew this before "black friday", usually I just stay at home to avoid the loones out there and keep my own sanity.  I've done black friday only ones with my adult nieces back East.  When I was still in the working arena, I always had to work anyway...

Yes lots of things go on sale. Squash, canned pumpkin, pecans, turkey parts, anything that was supposed to sell a lot on Tday. Kind of like how Halloween candy goes on sale the day after Halloween.

really Miss @Koukouvagia I never thought about it that way before, but yea, I guess that makes perfect sense!

I am marking my calendar right now with a note myself to go grocery shopping on black friday 2014, wanna come along?

I didn't get any oysters today, but the store I went to had a ton of whipping cream at 49 cents a pint.  A cream gravy for tonight's chicken.

I was disappointed that I couldn't find a turkey breast.  I wanted to stuff it with spinach & prosciutto.

I remember that thread ;)  So what did you make, and how did you prepare it?  I love turkey & chicken.  It's like that little black dress that goes with everything :)

I did do the slow roast chicken.  Loosely stuffed with lemon wedges, rosemary sprigs, garlic cloves, salt, pepper and thyme on the outside.  About 3 hours in a 200F oven, pull out, let rest while getting oven up to 425F.  Back in the oven for about 20 minutes.  Did a pan gravy and mashed potatoes, it was quite tasty!
