Food Saver finally died

Bought the next to cheapest Food Saver about 7 years ago and after heavy use the heating strip (sealer) burned out.

I think I paid about $75 for it at Tuesday Morning.

Will never EVER be able to match that price again after the cooking shows and rising food prices made buying in bulk and breaking it down for storage have made these small appliances so popular.

Really put it thru he77...grinding beef for 'burg and sausage...cooking huge hams and roasts and freezing meal size packages and MOST IMPORTANT....keeping our fishing catch nice and fresh (well sort of nothing beats enjoying the fillets from that day's catch that nite  :) ).

I am starting the hunt today...my only rule is that it be a proven longtime work horse and priced within reason.

Oh and the rolls of storage plastic be a reasonable price also.

 

Any suggestions?

Seems there was a thread here once about replacing those heads. Have to look.

There was a post to the effect that replacement heater strips could be purchased and you could install them. You'll have to search for it.

I had the same thing happen to me. When I went to replace the rubber seals and sealing attachment, I found my model no longer existed.

I ended up buying the newer hunter's design model. Have had it for 3 years now. Works great..

I've thought about getting one of those, they run pretty expensive don't they?  And where does one store such a monstrosity?

The replacement parts have been ordered (heating coil wire as well as another thingamabob all for under $10.

Also found a great after Christmas sale and so went ahead and bought an upgraded Food Saver model for under $200.

The bags can be pricey so we use the "make your own" rolls instead of the precut ones.

Every couple of months I start watching for beef sales and pick up a Brisket or two (about $2.50 untrimmed) and maybe a chuck roast or something else pretty on sale and Dennis will trim and cut the meat into manageable pieces.

He trims and grinds to my specs (KA mixer grinder attachment) mixes around (lightly don't want to pack it down) makes custom sized bags and fills with a pound of meat, seals dates and pops into the freezer.

Figure in the meat, bags and whatever other charges there may be and the ground beef usually comes in at around $3.25/lb (guesstimate average).

Pork loins on sale?

Buy 2 and slice into chops, bag, seal and freeze.

Dennis like to make sausage.

The fish he catches....priceless.

I have tons of storage in my home as well as an upright freezer so I shop the sales alot...and the actual machine is about the size of my KA only much shorter and virtually flat (of course there are the commercial machines and they are a bit bigger).

You do have to be aware of your expiry dates and sometimes the seal on the odd bag will break.

Not for everyone koukou but it works for us.

I buy the premade bags from here, have been using them for 5 or 6 years now. the packs of 100 are pretty reasonable.

There are some heavier duty vacuum sealers out there on the market but they start around $300, I figure one of those will probably last 10 years before needing parts and I seem to get 5-8 out of the higher end Food Savers for ~$150 so I go with the cheaper.

 

I also bag bulk pasta(hit seal after most of the air is out unless you don't mind some broken pasta), bulk rice and beans etc.
