Stop the bleeding!

I prefer Celox and Hemcon but I agree- hemostatics are a key part of every first aid kit.

Could one use a maxi pad?

Um, there is a "slight" difference, the Quik-Clot absorbs the liquid and leaves the platelets to coagulate, I do not believe that is the goal of sanitary napkins.

I carry a couple maxi pads in my kit actually.  It really helps control bleeding along with direct pressure.  I also have some of that quick clot stuff.

The first step in treating a bleeding wound is to STOP THE BLEEDING!

 

Generally, this is done with direct pressure on a gauze pad of some type, the pressure slows the flow of blood out of the body and allows it to start coagulating.

 

Both gauze pads and sanitary napkins are good, even towels will work.

 

Quik-Clot (and several other similar products) have an added feature, they absorb the liquid (water/plasma) and leave the platelets to coagulate quicker. As soon as the wound coagulates, it can be dressed, either temporarily for transport to a treatment center or if additional treatment is unnecessary, permanently to return to work.

Don't forget the krazy-glue for first aid kits. It's wonderful.
