Oh my. If I show this one to my girlfriend, we are probably getting some of those, too. The silkies were chosen for the punk look, too....

I never got the whole thing about breeding certain chicken races. I mean, they are all meat and lay eggs, no?

That is.... until I got my own. Those aren't even a pure bred race, but seriously, look at the red ones in particular. Aren't they beautiful? The photos don't do them real justice, They have a certain metallic sheen to the plumage. Also, very friendly birds.

I was just discussing this, as we are now able to have 6 chickens on our home property.  I was just looking into building a small coop with caged roaming area.  My kids probably will want the swing set back after we tear it down to make space LOL (although they dont use it now).    I think it would be cool to have some chickens clucking around.

Be careful when you start... Started with 4 chicks, now we have 10 already. And quail. And rabbits. The ducks are going to arrive soon, too...

And yes, it is most definitely cool to have them around. Not to speak of the very tasty eggs!

We are only allowed to have 6.  My neighbor and I were just discussing having our handy husbands build the coops to save money (mine has built a 15x15 tiki hut in my back yard so this would be minor) as the cost of organic free range eggs here are now about $6 a dozen US.  Chicken feed and a bit of cleaning would cost alot less.  I am considering it seriously, and may start the process next week. :)
