Two Years Before I Can Start Working

Hi!

I'm a college student in India and I would like to become a pastry chef after I graduate. The only issue is it'll take me two years to graduate with my law degree and I don't want to drop out.

Since I am a full-time student and I live in a dorm, it won't be possible for me to do an apprenticeship or even practice at home. The only option is of taking weekend classes.

What would you suggest me to do? The classes aren't very expensive, but I get to do it only twice a week.

Is there any other option?

There are lots of skills and theory that can be learned for free  (youtube as well as minimal charge tutorial sites like craftzy.com) in the comfort of your dorm room.

Lots of books (culinary texts) out there also.

Find a knife you like and then start bringing fruit back to your room and learn knife skills.

Toss some yogurt in the mix and share.

If you tie up all your down time up with pastry classes my fear is that your law studies will suffer and you will end up burned out in both subjects.

Thank you flipflopgirl!

I think this sounds like a good idea. I started reading Beaten, Seared and Sauced which is a CIA graduate's memoir about the goings-on at CIA. It hasn't been given great reviews, but I guess it's good enough for a starter.

 

I am abroad for a month, so I have an entire kitchen to myself (so I can bake and stuff), what would you recommend me to start with?

Not knowing your skill set nor ingredients available I can only recommend what my Gma Van taught me first.

Cookies!

Find a simple recipe (what is your favorite cookie?) read and read it again.

Look up words and instructions that are not familiar.

When you can walk thru the recipe in your head make a list and go shopping.

Purchase the best ingredients you can afford (make sure you have all the tools needed) bring them home and have at it!

If your first attempt is not stellar just laugh, shake your head and have your friends over for a tea party anyway.

As I mentioned above my Gma Van (yes I am part Dutch) was my first mentor.

Do you have someone in your life who would take you on?

Someone who you could call when you are stuck?

One last thing....if your chosen recipe requires an electric mixer and one is not available to you.....

Use your clean hands and a big spoon.

Gma insisted I be able to do many things by hand.

If you feel stuck just come back here and start a new thread.

Ah, the cookies!

I made my first batch last week. No one in family bakes, so I had no idea what is to be done. So I took out a recipe online. Martha Stewart, I guess. I guess I put the ingredients exactly how they were supposed to be, and the batter looked pretty good. Until the cookies were to come out. Okay, how do I put this? They weren't cookies after all. I guess the batter was slightly thin, so the baked thing was spread all over the plate and burnt on the sides. I guess I need to add less butter next time.

Nevertheless, the end product didn't taste terrible.

Stop right there!

If something turns out bad and you really really want to love it....make it again following the recipe to the T.

Important rule and good for you to know...before changing anything master the recipe as written.

If I try a new one and it does not work after two attempts I ditch it and move on.

With the www there is no need wasting expensive ingredients....just MOVE ON lolol!

Can you link that MS one?

Hers can be notoriously fickle.
