Is it possible to be an apprentice these days? I know there is Acf apprenticeship but for instance in New York are there Chefs that would take in a person willing to learn everything rather then going to school.

I would.love to travel around to different countries cooking. I mean who wouldnt? But I just want to learn.

Well what your talking about would be staging....

Since apprenticeships offer legal documentation, some times pay, and government authorization.

Working for free to gain experience and just to learn, without any legality or documentation, contract etc... is just staging or intering.

Anyone can really do it, just have to find someone willing to take you on.

Yes,

I decided that I wanted to learn how to professionally cook back in January, did some research and found a program through a community college here in Aurora, Colorado. You go to a class once a week, and work 40+ hours for a restaurant from their sponsoring house list for a chef. This one is a 3 year program and costs a fraction of the price of a lot of other schools that I looked into. Um, if you do not have these sort of options in your area, I honestly think the move to this area to study at Red Rocks Community College is truly worth it. It's win-win for a lot of the sponsor houses up here because it improves their retention rates, even when they have to start from the ground up with ya. I landed a position with nothing but fast food management experience under my belt. Many of the chefs on the sponsor list are actually graduates from this program..

Check it out! I have not actually started the school portion, but I feel like I've grown a lot since starting my employment under the sponsor list.. Good luck and I'm sure there are other programs out there like this one if you know how to google it up.
