These video ads are killing me

Thread Starter

Anyone else having trouble with the video ads that are on every page?

I'm constantly getting pop up error messages saying the javascripts on these pages have crashed, listing different servers, but always related to the ads.  On the rare occasions I don't get that, I get an error in the flash player.  When it's the java popup it freezes my whole browser for at least 30 seconds before it gives me the error and lets me stop the script

If they manage to play without issue, the video itself is usually slow and stuttering

Not to mention it's just frustrating when you open a few search results in different windows and you get 2 or 3 videos chattering in the background.

I understand there's gotta be ads to support the site and all, I wouldn't even complain if they didn't cause any problems, but with 7 ad areas (with video and scrolling ads) on every page, where the videos auto play with sound whether that window has focus or not, and throw in buggy code....it's making it very frustrating to keep any part of the site open

I'm on windows 7, running whatever the latest version of Firefox is, plenty of ram/cpu/gpu//bandwidth.  Happens whether I have other programs running or just my browser, whether I have 15 tabs open or just one or two.

Is it just me?

**shrugs** not just you, I'm on Win7 and these things are slowing down my laptop immensely,

I'm getting long lags, hangups and the occasional error.

The ironic thing is that it doesn't tend to make one very open to the lure of the ads themselves.

I feel better in a way, knowing it's not just me.  Not that I'm happy you're having trouble too, you know what I mean haha

It did that to me this afternoon when I was in the middle of a phone conference!

I had this open in a tab in the background, but that tab was last loaded over an hour before that

Wonder if the webmaster is reading this thread?  I'm having serious issues too.

Hey guys here is the scoop. There were some Verizon ads that were causing issues and a block was put in a few days ago. Please let me know if you continue to experience problems and let me know which ones are prompting audio. They shouldn't be doing that and we've been in contact with the advertiser recently about it.

Thanks!

Thanks Nicko

I actually have stayed away from the site for a few days, instead of keeping a tab open for it like I had been.  It got bad enough that my laptop was constantly extremely hot to the touch where my graphics card was.

But I'll keep one open for a while and see how it acts and let you know!

that didn't take long :(

within a few minutes of being open my computer is smelling hot.  Haven't had any sound with the videos, which is good, but just got this error message again:

Warning - Unresponsive Script:

A script on this page may be busy, or it may have stopped responding. You can stop the script now, or you can continue to see if the script will complete.

Script: http://redir.adap.tv/redir/javascript/adaptvInfo.js:1

At the time it was that Hollywood(?) ad.  To type this I had to open internet explorer and come here with that....this one hasn't frozen yet, but the video is still sitting there trying to load after about 2 minutes, and my laptop could now serve as a hotplate

p.s.

if you google "http://redir.adap.tv/redir/javascript/adaptvInfo.js:1" it's just page after page after page of people reporting performance issues relating to this particular ad script

I don't know now if the overheating and lagging issue is a result of the video itself, or the script related to the ad

either way, I'm closing this down again, I can feel the heat radiating off my laptop and it's not even in my lap

I lied, I'm back for one more quick detail...

I had to go to the task manager to shut down firefox and FF was using 1.08GB of ram (not too uncommon), but the flash player plugin was using 2.3GB!

no other tabs I had open had any flash components on them, just a single cheftalk page

I'm still having problems with distorted sound and videos playing without clicking them

Thanks guys I went back to the ad providers we will get this resolved. I know they are a pain at times but the ads are what keep the lights on. :)
