HELP!!! What can I do with all these grains/beans?

Thread Starter

I went crazy and bought about 20lbs of beans and grains.

Please give me some recipe ideas.

I have:

Gold Burghol #1 Fine

Urid Gota (this looks like cous cous but I think its a grain not pasta)

Whole Wheat

Whole Pearl Barley

Jumbo Dry Lima Beans

and Dried Fava Beans

I have to say, that's a tough list.

The urid gota is a legume/pulse not a grain. It's used in Indian cooking for dal and, fried in ghee or oil with other spices as part of a tadka or last minute seasoning.

I'm assuming yours is pale and split rather than still whole and with the black skin on it. Try looking for recipes for Urad Daal or Dal.

Wheat can be cooked into a porridge or ground for flour and I have seen a salad using cooked wheat berries. Barley begs for some beef soup bones, carrots, onions, celery to make a soup.

Thank you! They were a recipe from my grandmother. We used to eat them at the beginning of nearly every meal when we went visit her.

Here's how you do it:

1) Soak dried fava beans overnight.

2) Peel the fava beans and let them dry (about an hour).

3) Deep fry for a few minutes.

Make sure they get crispy/crunchy and golden brown. This can take a few minutes. The last batch I made, I didn't want to make them too crunchy so I stopped their frying a bit earlier... they ended up chalky and sticking to your teeth. Not good. ;) But when done right they're absolutely delicious.
