HELP! Need inspiration for dinner party!

Thread Starter

Wondering if anyone out there can recommend a recipe/s to me.

My wife and I have another couple coming over for dinner tonight and I'm cooking. We're all foodies and one of the couple is an accomplished chef so I feel I need to do something a little special.

I was thinking some kind of slow cooked meat but I'd really like to get some nice/interesting flavours in there as well.

I'd also like some kind of vegetable side that's also a little special.

In Melbourne, Australia at the moment it's Spring but it's a pretty mild overcast day today so we could get away with anything. We'll be having plenty of good red wine (I'm thinking sharaz) so something like fish wouldn't really work.

I guess I need a quick, easy, interesting desert too but the focus is on the main course and sides.

I have the whole day to buy stuff and prepare so time isn't a factor. Happy to spend a bit of money as well since it's a special occasion.

If you could recommend any recipes that would work in this situation I'd be grateful. I feel I've done all my dinner party recipes recently.

Any other dinner party hints, tips and suggestions also welcome.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Never be intimidated by a Chef or a Foodie . Any , and I mean any dish that is executed properly (with all the variables) is all that truly counts.

If you like slow cooked dishes, what about a good beef bourguignon ? Let it cook for a couple of hours, make a good mash, arugala salad all dressed up. Maybe finish your meal with fruit and cheeses ?

This is a thread that has some ideas.

Lemon curd is fairly easy to make, put into ramekins and chill, then at dessert time top with whipped cream and berries. Asparagus with hollandaise is a nice side.

Start with a cheese platter.

Slow roasted lamb shoulder. Rub it with spices and herbs and put it in a deep roasting pan. Cover with foil and stick it in a low over oven for 4 hrs. Done.

Hassle back potatoes.

Peas with mint

A raddichio salad with orange vinegraitte

Cheesecake -super easy to make ahead

If I go out, I expect everything to be done properly. If I'm eating at your house, whatever you put in front of me is fine. Don't be intimidated.

Elephant Stew

1 Elephant, Chopped

40 gallons prepared Gravy

2 rabbits (optional.)

Cut elephant into bite size chucks. Cover with gravy and slowly simmer two weeks. Serves 4600. If expecting more people, add the rabbits. A word of caution, however, since some are rather put off to find an unexpected hare in their stew.
