meat slicer advice

Hi all! I'm looking to purchase a new meat slicer that doesn't cost more than.$500. Was considering Avantco ... there seemed to be some goods review on Amazon but looking for some Cheftalk experience.

We use pro slicers like Globe or Hobart which cost 3 1/2 times that

Frankly from what I've seen most homeowner style slicers aren't that good. If you don't mind waiting you might be able to snag a good hobart on ebay or a restaurant auction.

Chef's Choice makes a fairly decent home slicer. Posted a review several years ago about the 662 but then forgot about it. Probably need to update that.

Anyhow, I guess this could serve as an update.......

I'd buy one again if I needed to. It's not as good as the Hobart or Globe models found in Pro kitchens but does a great job with the light use at home. Still have ours 6 years later but it's not used as much as it once was. The blade has held up well and holds an edge better than I expected. It's easily disassembled for cleaning (using the blade removal guard makes this a snap) and stores well on the retractable appliance shelf we had added to one of our cabinets. (kraftmade mixer shelf) The plastic spacer has never been replaced mostly because it wasn't as much a problem as I thought. I did remove the carriage and chariot guards but that was me. Your level of comfort may not be the same.

Price has gone up a little since we bought it. Amazon has it listed at the following link but you may be able to find a better deal elsewhere.    http://www.amazon.com/Chefs-Choice-662-International-Professional/dp/B0000667GX
