what is the diameter of the usual borosilacate rod honeing rod?

I have found "raw" borosilacate rods to be inexpensive on the net. I am considering buying one and mating it with a handle to make a honing rod. Does anyone have one and what is the diameter of the rod.

If this project turns out to not feasible where is a good place to get a plain smooth steel rod?

Just for reasons of strength I wouldn't think less than .375"/9-10mm, there is no reason to be thicker.
