What are you preparing for Saint Patrick's day?

So I was wondering, how many of you celebrate Saint Patrick's day, and for those who do, what are you going to prepare? 

 

I've never celebrated it, but I thought I might start this year! Not too sure what to prepare but apparently I should boil some corned beef along with some cabbage? 

 

Any other ideas?

This is an American thing than eaten in Ireland. This was a food custom started by emigrants who wanted to try and replicate what they got in their homeland.

 

As most of my family were born and raised on the Isles I can tell you if we didn't start the day with an Irish Breakfast then we certainly finished off with some hearty grub such as Crubeens, Beef and Guinness Pie or Beef Stew with dumplings. We also would have some Irish Bread and Pudding. Oh.....and don't forget the Guinness, Whiskey and Mead for your Pota Pádraig! None of that green beer crap....lol

 

You can also make some Irish Stew, Colcannon, Soda Bread, or Shepherds Pie.

 

Irish St. Patrick's Day Toast:

 

Saint Patrick was a gentleman,
Who through strategy and stealth,
Drove all the snakes from Ireland,
Here’s a toasting to his health.
But not too many toastings
Lest you lose yourself and then
Forget the good Saint Patrick
And see all those snakes again.

I only have 3 comments:

1) Guinness is great for a braise

2) Guinness beer batter

3) Corned beef is a half measure.  Take it to the smoker and make pastrami :D

Corned beef, cabbage, potato and turnip.  Probably with green beer as a starter.  (sorry about that, and apologies to all who are offended by it... but it is fun so....) Might go English with dessert and do a steamed pudding.  Definitely end the evening with an Irish coffee if still standing upright enough to make it.

Being neither Catholic nor Irish, I don't celebrate the holiday per se. I usually prepare a corned beef because the price is good at that time. Pressure cookers simplify cooking a corned beef enormously.

When it comes to cooking the vegetables, you have to know how fast your pressure cooker comes back up to pressure. My Fagor is a little slow so i have to count the cooking time differently, including much of the time for the cooker to come to pressure, not just the time at pressure.

Living in NYC it's hard not to celebrate. I celebrate by staying indoors - too many wacky drunk people in and on the streets and quite possibly some yucky puddles to avoid. 2nd avenue smells like beer.

I often braise a corned beef brisket in Guinness. We really enjoy that and see no reason to diverge.

Once I attended a Rangers/Islanders game on St Patties day. Wow that was crazy! Hockey + Irish fun = chaos!

I'm going to prepare my fiddle for playing with the band at a celebration, so no cooking for me. They are cooking hundreds of lbs of corned beef along with cabbage and potatoes. They do a good job and for the most part people keep the shenanigans to a minimum. Last year though someone had left a car in the parking area that was closed off for this event, and our bass player kept setting off their car alarm. The people almost got worked up enough to pick it up and carry it away! :D

 

I'd considering corning my own beef some time but the briskets seem to be expensive either way. Although I'm pretty sure all of the corned beef packs are loaded up with that 15% brine solution so you are paying for more weight than you would buying the brisket alone.

Here's a trivia question for you. How many years did the St. Patrick's Day parade in New York take place before any American citizens appeared in it?

St.P's Day is my birthday. My middle name is ... duh ... "Patrick". Starting tomorrow I'll be eating corned beef ... in all different ways ... until I puke. First will be a Reuben sammich, because ... well ... I just like it. I'll be drinking lots of beer ... none of it will be Guinness ... I don't like Guinness. I'm not Irish ... I'm "Chicago-American".

@Cerise Are you kidding me....my favourite sammies are Montreal Smoked Meats and Reubens!! Just add those meats to pretty much anything and I am happy....lol

 

Heya peeps.....don't be hatin on me family cuz they are staying true to their tradition from home and not eating corned beef nor having green beer on the Patrick's Day. They love corned beef just not on their traditional holiday is all.....lol

 

Besides....no matter what one eats or drinks....everyone is Irish on St. Paddy's Day!! :D

pastrami jerky and pastrami meatball sliders for bits and bobs,

dry cured homemade pastrami, baked corned beef, Guinness braised corned beef, baked cabbage, braised cabbage, bubble and squeak, roasted roots all with homemade Guinness horseradish mustard, oh yeah and plenty of mothers milk and hard tack.
