Recipe for Salsa?

Hello All! I am new here as of yestserday. Here is my intro in the Welcome Forum

I am looking for a recipe for Salsa.

anyone have a good one? Thanks! :chef:

Welcome.

HOTTER THAN **** HABANERO SALSA
1 small tomato, 2 medium onions, 3 cloves garlic, 1 medium red bell pepper, 1 fresh Habanero chile, 1 fresh Tabasco chile, 1 tablespoon chopped parsley, 1/3 cup water, 1 tablespoon lemon juice, 2 teaspoons canola oil, 1/2 teaspoon salt, 1/2 teaspoon thyme, 1/4 teaspoon oregano (mexican variety)

I would like to also recommend "Hellish Relish" by Sharon Niederman. It's available at amazon.com

Forty recipes are included ranging from jalapeno corn relish to marinated mushroom salsa, along with stunning photography by renowned photographer Eduardo Fuss.

Strawberry Salsa

Recipe By : Gatewood
Serving Size : 20 Preparation Time :0:20
Categories : Sauces Cold

Amount Measure Ingredient -- Preparation Method
-------- ------------ --------------------------------
2 quarts strawberries
3/4 cup red onion -- small diced
3/4 cup cilantro -- minced
1 each lemon -- zested and juiced
1/4 cup balsamic vinegar
1/4 cup olive oil
1 tablespoon sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon pepper
2 tablespoons cumin
1 tablespoon chili powder
1 teaspoon dried oregano
1 teaspoon nutmeg

Cut strawberries into rough medium dice.
Toss all ingredients lightly and adjust seasoning.

I have made a huge bowl of salsa but something is missing.

I used:

 

6 ex-large tomatoes

3 med. onions

2 cloves fresh garlic

2 jalepeno's

1 large can green chiles

1/2 tsp salt (hubby can't have salt so I have to use minimal amount)

1/4 cup vinegar

1 tsp hot sauce

1/4 tsp ground red pepper

1 head cilantro

 

This is not a COOKED recipe.

 

I can taste everything and it is HOT!!!  But it is bland.  It seems to me I am lacking tomato taste.

I had numerous people taste it for their opinion and everyone likes it BUT everyone keeps telling me to add more salr or a salsa seasoning packet.

I want this made from fresh ingredients.  If I wanted to add a seasoning packet I would have just bought it from the store.

One person told me to add sugar to bring out the taste??????

     I usually keep my salsa's a little more simple.  I usually just use a few fresh ingredients, mix and serve.  But just because yours is a bit more complicated doesn't mean it should be short on flavor.  I usually don't use garlic in my salsa, unless it's a roasted salsa (either rojo or verde).  I usually don't use vinegar in my salsa's either...I like to keep it fresh.  But that doesn't mean you can't put together a fantastic salsa with it, because you certainly can!

 

    I'm guessing your salsa need more salt.  Personally, I wouldn't use a flavor packet...but salt can go a long way.  If you made a large bowl of salsa it can use a decent amount of salt.  If your husband can't have a lot of salt then you need to find some way to bring the flavor forward.  I'm just not sure if anything can be as effective as salt in this case.  You can also try some lime juice and lime zest (or use a lemon if you don't have a lime).

 

  could you possibly make two bowls?  one with low salt and the other with a higher amount?

You probably had weak tasting tomatoes. Salt would help but that's out for your husband. My next suggestion is also a little salty, but something I picked up from Jacques Pepin in his Fast Food My Way books. He uses a little ketchup in salsa now and then. I think a little ketchup will help punch up the tomato flavor.  The other tomato options, (paste and such) would taste odd, uncooked, harsh.

I don't think I've ever seen a recipe call for a "head of cilantro" - interesting.

 

The canned green chiles may have added to the blandness.  Fresh, roasted chiles may add a bit more flavor.

lime juice. try lime juice.

and i agree with the person who posted that your tomatoes might have been weak in flavor.

also- is this even what you are looking for?  you said salsa, but not which kind.

a fresh salsa, not a cooked one? what are you using it for?

there are many different kinds, as many salsas as there are makers of salsa. and many uses.

you have to first read about the possibilities, then play...find one that suits your taste.

and yes, please stay away from anything packaged! it will ruin your nice salsa!
