How do I become a chef?

Wow that is a big question. The first is willingness. Willingness to work and willingness to learn. Dedication. Perserverance. Experience. Time. Patience. Also the word masochist comes to mind. If you want an actual step by step here it is. Go to culinary school. Work in the industry and some day. The other option is become a dishwasher right now today. Work your balls or other genitalia off. Watch and learn all that happens in the restaurant. Move up to prep cook. Same drill. Move up to pantry cook. Same drill. Move up to grill cook or saute cook. Same drill. Eventually go to a new place as a cook learn and watch. Eventually you will become a sous chef somewhere. Same drill watch learn do. Then one day it happens. Your teaching some dishwasher how to devein shrimp and he is saying yes chef to you. Culinary school is great but real world experience is better. Start dishwashing for 6 months. Then ask yourself do i still want to be a chef. If the answer is yes then you are a sick twisted demented individual with masochistic tendencies. Welcome to the family we love you now get to work.
That and somewhere a long the line develop the same cynical personality that almost everybody who works in this industry shares.
good example of this would be to read "letters to a young chef" by Daniel Boulud. Daniel is one of the worlds most accomplished chefs and I hear an amazing man to work for; but this book from the few I have read states quite well how the mind of a chef views the world.
