I'm on the hunt for a software or system to help with recipe building, work orders, inventory management, invoicing, delivery routes, etc.  Anyone have any suggestions, or know of a direction you can point me in?

Thanks! I found that list as well and it definitely has a lot of options!  I was hoping to find someone on here with any personal experiences or favorites.  Let me know if you have any!

     I have used MaitreD POS. I can't really compare it to any others because that is the only one I had management access to. 

There is a bit of a learning curve to figuring out how to make adjustments in it for your particular restaurant and menu as in changing the screen to reflect menu and pricing changes.  I would imagine they all perform similar functions. The style in which they do so is different as is the tech support and service. 

My biggest concern is the ability to self manage the program without having to call the support team every time you need to make a change.

     Otherwise you need to invest some time in exploring whatever system you buy so you understand how it works, what it can do for you and how to do it.  There are features you may never use and others you may use all the time. 

I would suggest contacting the rep for three or more systems so you can get a detailed demo of each. Sometimes even the rep won't be completely knowledgeable about the finer points of the system. So talking to them at length is important. 

     I would suggest having a backup, old fashioned paper ticket system at the ready for those rare occasions when the system fails. 

Once our monitor went dead in the middle of service. Another time the system crashed. Both on the weekend when no one was available for repair.

     On that note, make sure you understand the contract you sign as to what is covered. These systems are expensive and what gets replaced and/or repaired and for how much, what kind of support you get and when are all important details not necessarily covered in the initial cost.  

Once you have narrowed it down a bit, look online for complaints about each program and go see restaurant owners in your area.

 Some of the POS systems have more stable software programs that won't crash or hang, others crash and hang more often. Support is better for some than others. 

  Overall, I'd say it's better to have a POS than not have one. Once you get it going, it's a remarkable tool.
