I am used to seeing a zillion birds around the fisherman's backyard water feature so thinking to make my morning more interesting have started dumping a couple of handfuls of mixed seed on the brick ledge outside my office window.
Of course the lawn piranhas (squirrels) had to be discouraged and now that they have changed their dining to the evening hours, I have been enjoying watching the different bird species and observing their eating habits.
Started out with sparrows and wrens (they can hold an amazing amount of seed) and has branched out to the larger more colorful (and skittish) red and blue birds.
I have heard woodpeckers in the area and wish one would stop by but as yet nothing.
Lately a young female cardinal has been showing up halfway thru my morning.
Unlike the others that have learned to coexist this little girl seems to be a bit aggressive.
As soon as another bird shows up she runs at the newcomer, pecking and making a God awful squawking noise and chases them away.
Fun to watch and would love to share some pix but the screen is screwed down tight (and the fisherman is none too pleased about the area I bent in order to scatter the seeds ;-).
I am planning to hang a hummingbird feeder up soon.
It has been a warmish winter and expect the northern migration to start a bit earlier this year.
Like I said...fun to watch (but I am easily amused ).
