Feeding the Birds

I am used to seeing a zillion birds around the fisherman's backyard water feature so thinking to make my morning more interesting have started dumping a couple of handfuls of mixed seed on the brick ledge outside my office window.

Of course the lawn piranhas (squirrels) had to be discouraged and now that they have changed their dining to the  evening hours, I have been enjoying watching the different bird species and observing their eating habits.

Started out with sparrows and wrens (they can hold an amazing amount of seed) and has branched out to the larger more colorful (and skittish) red and blue birds.

I have heard woodpeckers in the area and wish one would stop by but as yet nothing.

Lately a young female cardinal has been showing up halfway thru my morning.

Unlike the others that have learned to coexist this little girl seems to be a bit aggressive.

As soon as another bird shows up she runs at the newcomer, pecking and making a God awful squawking noise and chases them away.

Fun to watch and would love to share some pix but the screen is screwed down tight (and the fisherman is none too pleased about the area I bent in order to scatter the seeds ;-).

I am planning to hang a hummingbird feeder up soon.

It has been a warmish winter and expect the northern migration to start a bit earlier this year.

Like I said...fun to watch (but I am easily amused ).

:)

I have been feeding the birds many years.  My wife tells me the squirrels are smarter than me.

Right?

Took me a week of running them off before they got the hint.

I don't actually see them just assuming they come back as the entire ledge has been hovered lol.

I have 3 varieties of squirrels to deal with. Black, grey and red, the red being the nastier of the 3.

I get blue jays, piliated woodpeckers, downy and hairy. We are several months away from hummingbirds, but I enjoy the variety of birds that stop by.

I have all kinds of birds in the yard. Finches, nuthatches, sparrows, gold finch, downy woodpecker, warbler, chickadees, hummers, northern flicker and of course, jays.

I put my go pro out on the sidewalk one day when I fed them their peanuts.

I love birds and I used to feed them in my yard and at a local park. It is one thing that gave me great joy until the birds quit eating bread and I'm not sure why. Although I may not feed them often as I used to I do watch them sit in the trees growing around my yard.

I remember one time feed the local ducks at my park, the duck got tired of waiting on me to throw the bread so he bite my hand.

BTW Chef Buba, I have to say I like that video a lot and the blue bird in the film looked amazing.

(I must say the Go Pro produces high quality film, I may look into it.)
