Buttermilk pie

Why has my butter formed to the top of my buttermilk pie while cooking? At the top of the pie, while in the oven, butter is present sitting in a pool at the top . I had mixed in the butter melted but cooled before baking.

Too much butter. Too hot an oven. Baked too much and overcooked. Not much way of really knowing without more details.

What does the custard look like when cut? Is the texture smooth and supple or rubbery? How does it taste (once the butter grease is mopped off the top)?
