It's interesting to see the menus and prices in some top restaurants from yesteryear to today.

 

What NYC Restaurant Menus Looked Like 100 Years Ago Vs. Today

It is interesting to look back at the dishes/menus/prices at restaurants from yesteryear.  Sorry I didn't have the opportunity to sample some of the greats that are long gone.  Would have liked to have had a taste of Mamma Leone's menu (in New York's theatre district), as well as Toot's Shor (sp?), "21" etc.  I had a slice of chocolate layer cake at Sardi's though, lol. Their colorful history is equally as enjoyable.

 

It took a bit of digging to find Mamma Leone's menu and there's not much info, but it's a good read...

There are some restaurants that are still around, and sadly some are gone - that I recall.

 

Alan Hale's restaurant in L.A. He used to walk around to the tables, introducing himself, and asking customers if they were enjoying the meal.  How often do you see that?

The Brown Derby. As I recall Sonny Bono took it over.  They put Cobb Salad "on the menu."

Chasen's. Gone. Their chili was famous, I've read.

 

At the end of the day, personally, I think, folks just want good food, plenty of it, at reasonable prices, and the classics never go out of style.  Trendy fusion and nouvelle cuisine left me hungry. :) I would have liked to have been a fly on the wall.

I used to take my wife to Momma Leone's every New Years eve. My new restaurant that isn't really new is Peter Lugers. It's a restaurant with the feel of old New York. The waiters have the long aprons that New York waiters were known for. They also have a NYC personality.

It's a small world after all. I've never experienced restaurants with waiters with long aprons. Sounds like a movie about the great chefs of Europe from another era.

There have been so many changes in restaurants over time - not only in price, but also by location and what wàs trending.

Used to be a time when folks got dressed for dinner out. Along came all you can eat buffets, salad bars, happy hour, poo poo platters, trader Vic's, waiters emptying your ash tray and hovering over you.

Even the restrooms have changed, Radio City's were huge with couches. Along came restroom attendant's handing you a paper towel, etc.

Later, waiters would walk around with footlong pepper shakers, asking if you would like some freshly ground pepper on your salad.

There should be a restaurant timeline.

I haven't thought of cobb salad in years and today I see it twice, once on CT and the Swedish version at a new restaurant a buddy of mine opened up on the first of May.

Translation, please? :) May pick up some crab legs this weekend, and change it up a bit.

 

The history of the salad and the Brown Derby is an interesting read. Supposedly, there's a replica (?) of the restaurant in "The Happiest Place on Earth" and they serve the Pink Grapefruit Cake (yellow cake with grapefruit cream cheese icing) too.

Translation: COB-SALLAD 149kr roast beef, ham smoked,east, eggs, bladsallad, vegetables, rhode Iceland........This is the translation but this looks more like our Chef salad.

Translation = roast beef, smoked ham, cheese, mixed greens, usually mostly iceberg with some mesclun mix tossed in, cut vegis ie broccoli florets, Rhode Island dressing which is generally mayo, katsup, conac and paprika powder. 149kr = 18.30 $


While it may be different than the traditional cobb salad we all know and love in the USA it's the Swedish adaptation
