Ordered some King Hawaiian sliced bread to give it a try when it came to me why are burgers round and not square. Frozzen or fresh I never seen them sold preformed that way other than a white castle burger. Yes you can make them at home but haven't' seen many square burger presses. Is there some reason food is the shape it is?

Sorry don't know how to correct errors in title

Wendy and White Castle are the only square burgers I've met outside of my grandmothers kitchen. So do I when using dinner rolls for sliders. But since buns and rolls are round, so are my burgers.

I have no idea how burgers evolved to the round form, though.

The modern burger was originally made on sliced bread - square - but I don't know if the patties were sqare or round. And I can't recall the name of the Rhode Island diner but they are still in business using the original equipment.

It is easy to make square burgers, take a small baking sheet and press your burger into it. Use a larger sheet pan and press down on top to flatten and pack the burger. Use some parchment paper top and bottom for ease of handling. Pull the pressed rectangle out of the pan, slice it by pushing straight down with a knife(this will seal the edges of the patties so they don't come apart). Mom did this all the time, fastest way to make burgers for a family of 7!

Yes. It's simpler to auger a round shape and then have that rotary sliced into patties. You can do this in a continuous feed.

You can make it square, but that requires a little more feed hassle and back pressure through a plate. And it tends to deform in the cut becoming a bit more romboid. It is also a little more hassle to bag.

The reason that some burgers are/were shaped in a square is so you could fit more of them onto a griddle. Back in the early twentieth century at White Castle (one of the first hamburger places) the cooks would load up the flat top with onion, burgers, etc. Like I said, you can fit more patties on a griddle if they are square instead of round.
