BBQ plate short ribs, who's done it? How?

My grocery store started carrying plate short ribs... they are huge with a long bone and lots of meat on the bone... looks kinda like this (except they're not cooked!):

I've never seen these before and would LOVE to cook them on the grill. I suppose slow and low is the answer, but I wonder if anyone's ever done it before?

Yeah! Smoke em if you got em. Dry rub- salt, pepper, garlic powder, chiles, maybe coffee. Set your grill up for indirect heating at 250F. Smoke till it's done just like a pork rib but it will take longer. You might need to wrap if they get too dark.

I won't say anything about time. It's done when it's done. The telltale signs are you pick up the rack halfway in with tongs and it bends, the meat pulls back a little bit from teh bone. Heck with this type of cut you can even go until the bone falls off.

I've been looking for this type of rib in our local markets for years. Finally figured out that they're called plate ribs and are #123A or #130. Where are you located and is it a chain store? I've been told that Costco Business centers sell them but I'm quite a distance from the nearest one.

Hmmmm. The gods are against me on this. I have a Costco menbership but not BJs and no longer have a way to get into RD.(. I'm also hearing that these ribs have a price that's up there with some prime steaks. I guess that makes sense except you're paying a lot for bones too ..... and we don't have a dog.

It's a Gelsons market in Los Angeles, CA. They started selling them only a few weeks ago. Never seen them at Costco either. I agree they're not THAT expensive.

Thanks so much for all the information. Not sure if I can get my gas grill down to 250F but I'll have to try. I have yet to try rubbing beef with coffee. So ... how much time? /img/vbsmilies/smilies/lol.gif (j/k)

I make these whenever I can find them! Dinosaur ribs! Like a chuck roast on a bone flavor wise. Slow smoked they are falling apart melt in your mouth tender!

If your gas grill is multiple burner just turn on one burner and put the ribs on the cold side. Use a foil packet of wood chips on top of the other burners flame bar for some smoke.

Hey, the oven is fine...just season them well.

And I agree with running only one burner on the gas grill. The foil pack with some chips in it works fine.

Good luck...I love a beef rib (even though I'm a Carolina Boy through & through...I do not discriminate when it comes to BBQ!).
Cool. Thank you Jay for your reply! /img/vbsmilies/smilies/smile.gif
