Hi there,

I have worked as a cafeteria cook for about four months, now need to find a new job as a cook.  I am very skinny, but I know I can make good food.  In my job as a cafeteria cook, I got many positive feedback from my clients.

In a job interview, do you think there will be a discrimination against me.

Thanks,

Jane

Welcome, Jane!  Shouldn't be a problem at all.  I've worked with a lot of skinny cooks (especially female ones) and it's never even come up.

Reminds me of one of my first job interviews.

The Chef was rather portly to say the least.

He called me into his office and told me to have a seat.

He went to his desk and sat down. As soon as he sat down I was "assaulted"

by the three buttons that flew off his chef coat.

I had to contain myself for not "busting a gut" laughing. He said nothing as if it did not happen.

I wound up working for him for almost five years.

Times are changing.  People are eating healthier.  Gyms are more popular than ever.  Somehow people wearing watches to count how many steps they take in a day actually exists and people buy them.  When you have to go out and talk to a table, what sort of chef do you think a guest would rather see?  I'm a yacht/ personal chef.  It's a superficial sector of the business in that you will rarely ever see an over weight chef.  Like it or not, right or wrong, the guests see your appearance as a reflection of the food you are producing for them.  Once again, not necessarily my personal opinion but it's the direction things are going.

I am a skinny cook and I don't think it has ever been an issue for me with it came to finding and keeping jobs.  Sometimes being skinny can be a blessing in disguise... like when you need to get to the breadcrumbs that are sandwiched between two skids of flour...

It's been my experience that my work, references and experience speak for themselves so size should not matter

Good luck to you in your search!

yup being lean is good as u can move around faster between those cramped kitchen spaces.

but do hit the gym and build muscular endurance..physical fitness in gym can prevent lot of backaches, picking up heavy pots full of broths etc.
