I Just Like Food

About Me:

Hello, I am a Brit living in France and my interest in cooking developed when I got married and had a family. At school we had Cookery classes where girls learnt the basic english recipies (using imperial measures) which have been so, so useful with which to experiment and enhance to make into my own. Years later, I was lucky enough to attend a catering college which lead to work in aspects of the Hotel and Hospital (Hospitality) trade so can appreciate both the professional and domestic aspects of catering alike.

Moving to France has opened up another aspect of cuisine that is really fascinating. We live in a part of the countryside that uses almost every part of animals that you can imagine, and where most people with a garden grow there own vegetables, fruit bushes and trees and nut trees also. One of our next door neighours has chickens, ducks, rabbits all year round use and during the summer rears pigeons. Another neighbour has a few sheep; for lamb in the springtime which are for personal consumption. Up on the nearby ridge, during the autumn months, wild boar are shot for the pot and there is a yearly mushroom hunt in the woods for the local community (overseen by experts of course). Most people have gardens and plant their vegetables by the phases of the moon. Local small farmers go into their fields and both feel and taste the grain to judge if it is ready for harvest. Being a brought up and always lived in a town/city, this is a whole way of life which harks back to the UK 50-60 years ago. So many basic rural skills. I love it.!!

We try to eat out at our local bistro where a good country style lunch can be had very cheaply so that we can try lots of things that we would not normally be available in the Uk and which have been put together in an entirely different way. We try to patronise our local shops as much as possible even though the prices are a bit more expensive than the big supermarket chains.
