A great idea.....

In the right hands, this idea is worth millions. But this idea has nothing to do with cooking, although it is "hospitality based".

Like all great ideas, this one came to me while sitting on the john at work, a smallish 200 room hotel. While seated, I'm staring at the stack of partially used paper rolls, 6 of them to be exact. Yes, I do get it, housekeeping replaces the rolls in the rooms when they are halfway used, and the used ones go to staff. No problems there, it makes sense.

So here's the million dollar idea:
Invent a simple machine to re-roll several partially used paper rolls into one full roll! It would save buying in new rolls by as much as 50%.

My idea. I'll take a 10% commission on the sale of every machine invented and sold to hotels..........

Thats a shity idea! If thats your thinking then why not reverse the bottom fitted sheet on the beds so it makes less wash for housekeeping. Why not squeeze leftover shampoo into 5 gal buckets and refill the small plastic containers. If you want to figure something out. Try to come up with a better method of reusing throw pillows that are reused on the beds. Everyone throws them off the bed onto the floor. The last guest could have used these for so many things I really don't even want to think about. Then the maid comes in and puts the pillows back on the bed for the next guest. I also hate to think of how many people touched the remote control. My job when traveling is, after I clog the toilet I have to call down to the front desk and explain how my wife clogged it. Then ask for someone to come up and unclog the toilet.

I also forgot one more point. When I'm leaving the hotel room carrying three bags I can always hear my wife calling out to me. She is saying Honey? did you get the toilet paper off the roll and the full roll under the sink. Honey ? Do you have room in your suitcase for a full box of Kleenex. Honey? did you get the soap, shampoo, conditioner and lotion off the counter. Honey ? did you get the coffee and tea off the counter. ...........Just sayin'

Chef Billy I definitely see your point- I am guilty myself of packing all of that up in my suitcase after all (I'm cheap and hey..I paid for it). But honestly that sounds like a brilliant idea. Maybe not in the sense of being filtered right back into the hotel as a 50% return sounds more hopeful than practical, but having a recycling company purchase it back up so the hotel gets some return then it is resold under new packaging as recycled. Nobody really wants that single-ply from dollar general but hey could be a way to purchase the good stuff at discounted prices and feeling mildly better about your carbon footprint for the day.

I'm not understanding. I would understand it if there was TP being discarded without being used.
OMG, could you imagine if there was no TP in the employee restrooms. The court system would be full of cases.
BTW. Almost all properties I've worked at, managers had a permanent key to a corner room, where we did our business. Naturally, excluding Fri. & Sat. nights. Those corners belonged to the escorts.

I stay in hotels probably 60 nights or more a year and it doesn’t even cross my mind to pack up the toiletries or everything else that isn’t nailed down. What in gods name inspires the idea to pack up tiny portions of soap, conditioner and hand cream?

Growning up with Parents that lived through the Great Depression. When I was a kid we had to hear stories about how hard life was during those times. People had to pinch pennies and not waste anything. I remember my Mom simmering a whole chicken in a pot to get a broth and then putting the chicken in the oven for a roast chicken dinner for the main meal. She would serve the broth with cold egg noodles to cool down the hot broth. The idea was to fill you up with the soup half way before the main meal was served. I think the idea is "waste not want not" You paid for it way not take it. I always laughed when I looked into our bathroom closet. I would see the soap my wife took from Disney World 25 years ago.

You got all of that for one meal???? We’d get the roast chicken on Sunday, and chicken soup (the carcass and lots of rice or noodles) on Tuesday. As a filler at each meal we’d get lots of mashed potato (made with milk but no butter) and a big stack of white bread.

Re: small soaps, etc. they are fun momentos and some are even rather high quality. We always leave the TP though.
