In an emergency I purchased 2 pounds of angus ground beef 7% fat, very pink/red and fresh looking. Appeared to have been ground and processed by a standardized machine as the links of ground meat were lined up. Inside the meat was the same pink red, not the typical brown of aged meat from most locations. No odor, felt clean, tender, fresh. Upon cooking, the meat has a foul odor and a foul taste tasting of chemicals. On closer examination, the meat was exuding pink fluid which was slimey. I believe they treated the ground meat heavily with some kind of dye to keep the uniform pink/red coloring throughout the full depth of the packaged meat. The exudate and the odor/taste were unacceptable. The manager I took it back to refused to smell or taste it, and said that their beef was the highest quality, just look at the color throughout, uniform red. he would not discuss the additives, or any other measures they take to market. Ive seen steaks in WD when looking at the bottom of the package upside down, the meat was slimey and green. It is routine for WD meat to be on the shelf past the pull date. Personally, I think WD is a disgusting store and its all about cost conservation and profit. Yes most customers observed were blue collar and below, most paid with subsidies, never again will I buy anything from WD, its just not safe. You even have to fight to get paper bags to pack your purchase, seems paper is more expensive than eco unfriendly plastic. They could care less.
