Hi Guys,

I need some advice on which is a good Handheld meter. I am currently checking out meters from Thermoworks which where recommended in Modernist Cuisine. My Issue is basically I do not know of any other brands that are good and also I am not sure of what type of probes I need to buy. I will be using it mostly for

1) Grilling

2) BBQ

3) Roasting

As I am tired of "assuming" the internal temperature when cooking. A few months ago I was going to buy this model : thermoworks TW8060 which had pretty solid reviews but I do not think it is still being manufactured.

My only requirement is that I do not want pens etc. I want something which can be used in all sorts of cooking and then will buy the pen in the future.

Thanks i advance =)

Guys I am honestly lost on this topic as I am kind of reluctant to buy anything before I get as much info as possible.

This is a good place for me where I can buy the items I need. I was planning on buying this without the probes:

http://thermometer.co.uk/food-proce...hermometer.html#/thermaq_options-thermaq_only

Then I was hoping to buy 2 probes one with a thin needle for grilling etc and another one for roasting but I am clueless what I need to buy.

1 more question can probes be left in the oven(not the meter). I would appreciate all the info you can give me guys as I am officially lost xD

My Maverick ET
Take a look at the Maverick ET 733. A lot of die-hard smokers use theses here. and they're pretty cheap.

Not the older ET 73 they suck.
My Mavericks ET 73 has served me quite well for the past nine years!!! And I use a meat probe in both jacks for "temping" two pieces of meat and leave the measurement for the ambient temperature to a TelTru dial-type thermometer secured into the lid of my Weber Smoky Mountain smoker.

Based on the reviews for the 733 at Amazon, it appears iffy. And the instructions for both units sucketh bigtime. All I do with my ET73's is measure temperature and don't bother setting alarms or any other bells and whistles. Their instructions are too complicated. 8(

I mostly need them for testing steaks(in pan)/liquids and one for roasting in an Oven. Not Smoking, I plan on smoking in the future but I need to buy a bigger BBQ or a smoker.
Both Maverick units are suitable for ovens and smokers.

For smoking, take a look at the Weber Smokey Mountain smoker.

As a scientific inclined person I would be looking for something that you can calibrate.

I was giving a probe/alarm as a xmas gift a while back and my cooking was always off... found out the probe were exactly 10C off.

It had preset temps not programmable so it made my life complicated...
