Yes indeed there are special precautions to take. If your heat source is directly under yuor window, then it's not a good idea to have your herbs onthe window sill. Have it a few feet across from the window and keep them on water-filled trays - just don't let them sit in water. You'll need the humidity in the winter time. In the sumer time, it is very possible that the heat of the window will scorch your herbs; just keep an eye on them.

Some plants should definitely not be potted together: mint for example will take over jsut about anything. Anything that propagates throught he roots will kill everything else. Herbs grow at different rates so you always run the risk that a faster growing plant will crowd the others. I like to keep mine seperate personally. That way, if I get an infestation in one, the chances of the others being affected is much lower.
