My Oatmeal is Blue

Oatmeal with fresh or frozen fruit is a staple breakfast item here, however, when using frozen blueberries, the oatmeal turns blue. Is there some way to prevent that from happening?

Use brownberries.
Like Oldschool1982 said... Frozen blueberries always leach.

Use fresh.

Thanks Luc and Old .... kinda though that might be the case.

I guess there will be times I'll have to eat blue oatmeal, as wild and organic blueberries aren't always available, and even during blueberry season it's sometimes hard to get the small, flavorful wild berries. However, I'll try not to stir them into the oatmeal - that should help somewhat.

or you can close your eyes...:)
even better invite in a two year old and teach colors....
Happy Apple Guy has great fresh/dried fruit at Ferry Plaza (Dr. Art Lang)....:)
Hmmm - I bet some dried blueberries might be the answer when fresh won't suffice. Thanks for the idea ...

I tried closing my eyes but I kept missing my mouth <LOL>

Getting to Ferry Plaza from my place is a bit of a PITA. Generally, I only go when a friend comes in from out of town. She'll drive over, doesn't mind the traffic and expenses associated with bringing a car into San Francisco.

What's wrong with blue oatmeal??? I think it's kind of cool ! ;)
Just add turmeric to make it green instead :D no more blue
if you don;t like the blue, then put the blueberries on top after the oatmeal is cooked. I think it would taste better anyway. When i make blueberry pancakes i make sugar syrup, shut the gas and then add the blueberries and stir. I use it as syrup on the pancakes. You could do something similar, using only as much sugar as you like on your oatmeal, and lots of blueberries. you put them in frozen to the hot syrup wiothout further cooking and they defrost like that. Then the blue will be on top, and if you like, just marble it into the oatmeal, not mixing it, and it will be oatmeal with blue stripes, not blue-grey oatmeal which is not appetizing.
If you'd like to prevent your oatmeal from turning blue when using frozen blueberries, there are a few tips you can try:
  1. Thaw the blueberries separately: Instead of adding the frozen blueberries directly to the oatmeal, thaw them separately before adding them. This way, the excess moisture from the frozen blueberries won't mix with the oatmeal and cause it to turn blue.
  2. Add the blueberries at the end: Cook your oatmeal as usual and add the frozen blueberries at the very end, right before serving. This way, you minimize the contact time between the blueberries and the oatmeal, reducing the chances of color transfer.
  3. Rinse the blueberries: Before adding the frozen blueberries to your oatmeal, rinse them briefly under cold water. This can help remove any excess pigments that may cause the oatmeal to turn blue.
  4. Use fresh blueberries instead: If the blue color is a concern, you can opt for using fresh blueberries instead of frozen ones. Fresh blueberries are less likely to release as much color as frozen blueberries, reducing the chance of your oatmeal turning blue.
Additionally, if you're looking to add a different fruit to your oatmeal without worrying about color changes, you might consider using freeze-dried strawberries. Freeze-dried strawberries are a great option as they retain their flavor and texture while adding a fruity twist to your oatmeal. They won't release moisture or color like frozen blueberries, so your oatmeal will maintain its original appearance. Simply sprinkle some freeze-dried strawberries on top of your cooked oatmeal and enjoy the delicious combination of flavors!
