I have Windows 7.  A few weeks ago, I received a notice to reserve a free download of Windows 10 (available in July).  Have you tried it?  Pros? Cons?  I'm still on the fence, and trying to figure out a new ipad android.

Windows 8 interface and controls have been a disaster. I'm thoroughly disliking the modern/Metro UI products. They have no place on a desktop computer.And it's a poor touch concept too imho.

And they're still working that into the start menu for win 10.  I hate hate hate with a hot passionate hate the windows store. Try to download an app for win 8 like Nook without using the Windows store. BN hooks you all over into that nightmare. You can still download the PC version without the Windows Store but it's a hassle. The Windows store is a privacy nightmare. Sure, iTunes is the same. But I don't use that either. Or Google play... There are a lot of options beyond Google Play.

Microsoft is trying to become Apple rather than different. It's drving me bats.  Let me do things my way rather than trying to stuff me in computing straight jacket and turn on the interrogation lights.

Even with Windows 8.1, I'm finding I spend more and more time in Linux. Win 10 I might consider for some gaming support only, but my days using it primarily are long gone.

There's a reason MS is giving Win 10 away.  It's not worth paying for at a minimum.

Thanks @phatch. Think I will hold onto win 7 for my laptop as long as possible.

I hear ya about the interrogation re my new android/ipad. And, think the FREE downloads should be clearly stated, without giving out so many permissions and access. Would like to see a FREE virus program for same. It's still new to me..

Appreciate the input.

I installed Windows 10 just 2 days ago, and... so far so good! Honestly, I was expecting the worst like losing important files, my software not working etc.. The whole upgrade took around an hour and went without much action required from me. All my personal files remain untouched.

I bought this laptop equipped with Windows 7 with an upgrade agreement to Windows 8 and from there to Windows 8.1 and now Windows 10. I hope this is the very end of it.

Windows 8 surprised everyone with the crappiest design ever with those stupid tiles. It was as if the Microsoft CEO had ordered the company nerd to make whatever in a hurry. Compared to the (late Steve Jobs) perfectionism and stylish design of the Apple interface, Windows has still the nerdiest look ever. Those horrible tiles are still there in the "Start" section.... grrrrrr!

I don't get it why Microsoft doesn't see that Apple has no clients, only a die-hard fanclub...

But, let it be said, Windows 10 works well, stable and fast. And, it seems like all my other software works with it too!

Thank you Chris & Ed. Let us know how it goes. I think we have until the end of this month for the Free download. (I heard they skipped 9 because 8 was a mess.)

I've been enjoying a new (no-name brand) android tablet for about two months, until the battery wouldn't hold a charge. Arrrgh. Hard to decide what to pick, with so many choices and upgrades out there.

Windows = yeah!

Windows ME = boo!

Windows XP = yeah!

Windows Vista = boo!

Windows 7 = yeah!

Windows 8 = boo!

Windows 10 = ???

I'm expecting it to follow the trend. I like to wait for a few patches before switching though.

In fact I held on to XP until 2012 when some of my games/video card started acting wonky.

I tear the guts out of my old towers and give them to people who are worse off, save them for emergencies, and hard drives/optical drives go in my new build.

Laptops and tablets seems to be a bit more disposable to me.

We'll miss you, Steve!

I believe you have a whole year to accept the offer to upgrade! I must say that I systematically had my Windows 7, 8 and 8.1 upgraded when suggested by Microsoft. If you did also, I would dare to suggest to upgrade to Windows 10.

What I had to do is re-installing my Norton 360 "watchdog" antivirus (plus much more) program. Probably not Microsoft's doing, Norton and the previous Norton Systemworks were always notorious trouble makers.

I also bought a small Lenovo 8 inch Android tabled to be used when travelling. This thing has a specific design that keeps a larger battery than other similar devices. I tested it and indeed, the charge keeps the device working for... nearly 16 hours.

It's this one (sorry it's the french Amazon);
Again, exceptional design of the Android interface (by Google as I presume), compared to the nerdy Microsoft design.

Am all in Linux (Ubuntu).

I tried to install a dual boot and Windows crapped my laptop. It took 30min to revive my Linux partition (without reinstalling) but I know if it was the other way around it would have taken me a whole day to revive a windows partition and probably end up reinstalling (because it happened in the past).

I'm always exposed to Win and Mac because I'm always considered the technie guy in my surroundings.

I'm in Linux Mint. I've run a lot of Ubuntu, but am not a fan of the Unity interface they've been using. I do dual boot Windows 8.1, but I've only been in Windows twice in the last 2 months.
